TRITONUS X - Annika Hartmann, Theresa Hurka, Annika Pirzer @ Ehrensaal

We conjure up an opera-sci-fi medley of well-known science fiction film music pieces. Sung by Annika Hartmann and Theresa Hurka. On the piano Annika Pirzer.

JOMOON

JOMOON

Musician

Music for the good, for the bad and for the rebel ones. This is how JOMOON describes their music. This contrast is something her music lives from: melancholic atmosphere, scratchy sounds and deconstructed rhythms are the constant of her music production. She blends melodic elements as well as harder techno beats with an edgy touch into her music. The electronic sounds are accompanied by voices that give the appearance of human instruments through cryptic lyrics. With their music, JOMOON invites you to look into your soul and let your emotions run free while dancing.

Their music is inspired by artists such as Nicolas Jaar, Modeselektor and The Smashing Pumpkins. JOMOON accompanies their music with visuals generated by artificial intelligence.

Teleportation with exotic matter : dream or reality ?

Since 2003, I have been an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science of the University of Brest (France) and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa). I do research in the field of magnetism at the nanoscale. I love science fiction and use it to teach some physics concepts. As I enjoy engaging people’s interest, teaching is a wonderful intellectual challenge. For me, it was a great joy when students who were struggling with a new concept suddenly saw the light. Teaching also gives me the opportunity to expand my own knowledge and interest in science broadly, whether by preparing one of the newer modular courses that now include modern particle physics, for example, or doing extra-curricular projects, or simply answering questions about black holes or quantum tunnelling. In these courses, science fiction is often a great help.

Teleportation is part of the collective imagination and is at the heart of many dreams. Science fiction and fantasy subjects have appropriated this concept through works that are now considered significant. As an example, we can cite successes such as Star Trek, X-men, Dragon Ball, etc. Complementary fields of basic sciences such as quantum physics or relativity have also dealt with the concepts of teleportation. In addition, the involvement of the dark matter halo in teleportation has recently been discussed.

I invite you to get an overview of the concepts of teleportation through works of science fiction and scientific studies. These include films, comics, books and scientific articles. Understanding this overview does not require any scientific knowledge and should be fun!

OUBEY MINDKISS @ VRlab

The project OUBEY MINDKISS, founded and directed by Dagmar Woyde-Koehler, brings the art of the Karlsruhe artist OUBEY posthumously to the public in an idiosyncratic way far removed from the commercial art business.

The festival will present the latest VR productions from the project’s work. They were created in collaboration with Kubikfoto³ and form a bridge between the analogue and digital worlds, based on five analogue images from OUBEY’s multifaceted oeuvre.

Three interactive Virtual Reality Experiences – Voyage of the Monads/Samurai/Cosmic Voyage – allow the viewer to enter the fascinating world of these images and discover, experience and also change them in a playful and enjoyable way.

SEBASTIAN TRUMP @ VRlab

Sebastian Trump is a sound artist and music researcher. He is a research associate at the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg

BrainSound was developed as a project in Nuremberg’s LEONARDO – Centre for Creativity and Innovation. It enables visitors to create music using an EEG (electroencephalography) headset. An artificial neural network activates certain musical elements depending on the distribution of the frequency bands (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, theta), which were created as a brainwave score (sound design: Jan Pfitzer).

NICOLE STRASSER, NANUKU@ VRlab

Art and science are often seen as distant, even contradictory. In fact, they both have the same mandate to question our perception, our social constructs and the universe itself. In this respect, they go hand in hand. In my own work and the work under the collective name Nanuku, this intersection is explored. Bringing art&design together with technology&science is central to finding new expressions and insights.

Nyx is a scientific visualisation of the near environment of a black hole & its surrounding accretion disk. In general relativity it was realised that space is curved by mass & thus light rays are also curved. This leads to a variety of strange cosmic phenomena – the most amazing & wondrous being that of the black hole, which can be experienced here in virtual reality.

STUDENTEN DER LMU@ VRlab

E.MOTION was created as part of the final exhibition of the “Art and Multimedia” course at LMU 2021.

Inner Demons (Lucas Fellner), Wanderlust Within (Viktoria Lubomski) and In the Arms of Morphea (Melissa Müller).

Inner Demons visualises defence mechanisms in animated portraits and asks the question: Do I carry what I see inside me?

Fernweh nach Innen deals with the emotional world of people with a migration background and conveys this in an experimental, hand-drawn 360° film.

In the arms of Morphea, nightmares, sleeping problems and inner restlessness are dealt with in the framework of a fictional world – supported by augmented reality.

STAATSTHEATER AUGSBURG@ VRlab

Dance Performance

The Staatstheater Augsburg is taking part for the first time with its immersive robo-dance performance Kinesphere. In the stereoscopic 360° film you can learn to dance with robots!

FABIAN MARIA BÜRKIN

Speaker | Moderator | *Honorary Consul of Užupis*

With his unique moderation style of intimacy, interest, humour, eloquence and spontaneity, Fabian Maria Bürkin not only creates magical moments for the audience, but also manages to create an independent art form himself with his spontaneous and interactive moderation, which enriches every event and lets his guests shine. His background as an artist (author, acting and cabaret) enables him to reveal deep insights into other artists’ creative processes and motivations when talking to them.

In his function as producer, dramaturge and presenter, new show formats are created, precisely tailored to the needs of the respective event. Tailor-made moderations, as sexy and serious as Armin Laschet or as crazy as Elizabeth II.

Since working as an actor and presenter at the Burgtheater Wien in 2012, he has presented and curated the reading series “BarjederVernunft”, various literary events and numerous cabaret evenings throughout the German-speaking world.

This year, as part of this year’s Science And Fiction Festival, Fabian Maria Bürkin will be leading the scrap robot competition “Hebocon” and hosting the Saturday evening show “Wetten, was…?”.

JEREMIAS HEPPELER @Wetten Was...?

Intermedial, visual artist

Jeremias Heppeler sees himself as an intermedial visual artist who combines analogue and digital media (film, image, text, music) in an attempt to open up new, hybrid spaces. The experiment of constant de- and recontextualisation is at the centre of his work.

never call me human again” is the multi-layered narrative of a vision of the future, which is worked through in texts, images, film sequences and real drafts: An unnamed natural scientist is working on a prosthetic system that is supposed to give humans various characteristics of animals. The horns of a buffalo, the compound eyes of a dragonfly, the wings of a bird.

A simple table with electricity would be ideal for the installation, which can then be converted into a fictitious workplace.

FRIEDEMANN BRENNEIS

Journalist who is enthusiastic about the future and likes to travel in thematic worlds that no one has ever explored before.

What do we know about the money of the future? Practically nothing. Most of us don’t even understand the money of the present. But the future is not waiting for us. It has already arrived.

SINA GREINERT, BALLONETTI @ Installation

Sina Greinert is an artist who forms sculptures, costumes and large-scale installations out of balloons. Balloons radiate lightness and pleasure because they are associated with childhood, play and celebrations. Their transience lends them the charm of the momentary. Sina Greinert has blown up, knotted and interwoven many thousands of luminous balloons since she discovered the balloon medium for herself in 2005 and presented installations at exhibitions and events on four continents with her team “Ballonetti“.

COSMIC SHRIMP

Dark matter is invisible and thus a fabulous projection surface for artistic fantasies far removed from science. Is there life in it? Do gigantic creatures swim through dark matter like spaceships and celebrate New Year’s Eve every day? Perhaps a cosmic shrimp that emerged from the primordial soup with a big bang is conducting their dances? Probably not, but the fantasy deserves an installation.

KATHARINA ANDRESS @Museumsgeschichte

Artist

Katharina Andress is a Munich artist whose work poses the question of the future body of the human being. What will being human look like after the human being? What improvements to the human body through technology will there be, what technical implants and body extensions will we be equipped with? Will protective clothing replace our garments?

The sculptures from the series of the Andreonauts carry these questions within themselves, without giving a clear answer. They are figures that depict a kind of transitional stage, creatures in smart, technoid survival suits that refuse to be clearly gendered and that have already left the current human stage of development behind them. Are they still inhabitants of our planet or world changers from other galaxies?

followTheMatter

MICHAEL KLEMM · SEBASTIAN STALLENBERGER · SEBASTIAN VOGEL @Follow the Matter Art

follow_the_matter is an experimental artist collective for sound design and composition.

For us, it is clear that the exploration of Dark Matter has so far simply always been undertaken on the basis of the wrong sense organ – instead of seeing it with the eyes, one should rather try to hear it with the ears. Our soundscape at the Munich Science & Fiction Festival bundles the echo of distant galaxies (R.I.P. Alexi) and, with the dark energy it contains, drives the opponents of this year’s Hebocon to peak performance.

CONSTANZE XENIA BUDCKE @Vor dem VR-lab (Gang)

Artistic inventions often enhance human performativity found in fun, love, hate, work, leisure, hope, despair, etc.; what I do is nuanced and almost personal, some things explicit and playful. Sudden fluctuations in the pace of everyday life can subtly add fictional elements or mutate the trivial slowly into something unrecognizable and vice versa.

There is a player in a virtual room who pretends to be real.
In reality, however, this only exists on the screen. The difference between the digital and the physical world is clear to the player. That’s why he can leave the game, go to the balcony and have a cup of coffee.
But we cannot just leave the world where we find ourselves as human beings and recognize that there is another one. Even so, there seems to be a connection between digital space and the idea of multiple worlds. Is it the possibility that humans can live in different realities? “Your reality is not necessarily my reality…“ or “when different realities collide…” are well-known phrases after all. What is valid on one level doesn!t necessarily has to be true on another. But the fact that both are possible, for example with computers, through which we find ourselves in two realities simultaneously, the virtual and the physical, suggests that it could be the same beyond computer games. Perhaps we live in a world with the belief in specific laws, rules and values that are meaningful but are not necessarily true beyond our imagination, like in a simulation. Everything seems to be really important, so real. In fact, we find ourselves in a realistic world, but therefore it doesn!t necessarily has to be the only reality. But can the term „reality“ be defined?
The concept of reality is defined by signs. The need for its definition is communication. But how does it come about, and why does it matter? Does communication of virtual signs lead to realities that primarily consist of concepts and, therefore, perhaps lose the reference to materiality? Why should it be valid when every reality is basically a simulation?
Virtual characters arise through communication and enable a general understanding of similarities and differences in perception. The condition for the creation of new values is that characters can move freely. As a signifier, any free sign represents a variety of signified. Therefore there is not just one single possibility for the concept of a sign. Through interpretation and evaluation, it becomes a medium of value. But the relationship between signs and reality dissolves. The general idea of value is preserved through unlimited technical reproduction of goods, images and information. The meaning of each sign lies solely in the fact that it is linked to a position within the system, which decodes characters and reassembles them into characters in a new way. So actually, one could assume that signs don!t have any real value because they have no meaning. They would pretend to be helpful even though they are symbols for reproducibility and the relativity of value itself. Thus the meaning of a sign is measured not only by its use but by why it is produced. The reason for the imitation of any form or function ultimately determines the meaning and value of a sign. It is not the product that has any value, but the production of characters themselves.
So the concept of value arises as it evolves. Even if the relationship to its original reference dissolves, an ending remains impossible. And any revolution would certainly stay symbolic. So how and for what purpose should the system advance? Wouldn!t it be pointless to look for realistic solutions if every character is functional and symbolic?

CHRISTINA "XAOSPRINCESS" KINNE & VALENTINA CIESLAR @Ehrensaal

As a digital artist, Christina “XaosPrincess” Kinne uses innovative technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and brain computer interfaces to make art experiences accessible in a new light.

Valentina Cieslar is a freelance soloist and chamber musician. She plays historical music on original instruments such as the baroque violin or the viola d’amore. Her repertoire ranges from Renaissance to contemporary works.

For the Science & Fiction Festival, the two artists combine their fields of inspiration, which range from the first recordings of classical music to the early adoption of the latest technology.

BRAIN CONTROLLED LIGHTS

The light installation at the entrance of the physics department makes the emotional inner world of the audience of a classical violin recital tangible in colour by redirecting their brain waves via an EEG headset to colourful LED strips that define the performance space.

We thank 1:1 CONCERTS  for the inspiration for this setup, as well as Marius Anger for the custom Arduino code.

LEO PÖTTINGER @ Physik

Gravitational wave demonstrator

Two black holes in the vortex of their own attraction come closer and closer to each other and suddenly… Wham!

A signal from 1.4 billion light years away! The collision of two gigantic black holes could be observed here on Earth with the help of the finest laser physics. The Earth deforms like a stress ball, over and over again. In the interstellar Academy of Energy Research, a collision demonstrator has been created that shows the origin of these wondrous waves and highly sensitive laser physics.

Maybe there is a message for you!
